EUROPROBE is a Lithosphere Dynamics programme, concerned with the origin and evolution of the continents. It was conceived and has grown within the International Lithosphere Program (ILP) and, since 1992, has been supported by the European Science Foundation (ESF). This major venture is focused on, but not confined to Europe.

EUROPROBE is dedicated to carrying out a new generation of major projects that will improve our understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Earth's crust and mantle, and the dynamic processes which controlled this evolution through time.

EUROPROBE is an interdisciplinary program, combining surface observations with deep geophysical and geochemical probing; applying, adapting and   developing the latest technology to obtain an integrated image of the whole lithosphere. EUROPROBE has designed a range of multidisciplinary projects, located in different parts of Europe, to investigate the origin and evolution of continental lithosphere. Most of these projects concern orogenic processes: on-going in the Carpathians and the Caucasus; Paleozoic in the Uralides, the Trans-European Suture Zone and Iberia; Proterozoic and Archaean in the Baltic Shield. Others focus on intraplate tectonics and, particulary, on the evolution of sedimentary basins both in conjunction with cratonic rifting and with orogenic activity along plate margins. All these projects are dedicated to improving our understanding of the dynamic evolution of continental lithosphere.

EUROPROBE IN BRIEF:

  • Studies lithosphere across a United Europe; Connected with the framework of the ILP.
  • Today: 10 projects;  more than 30 countries, c. 5 MEcu research budget annual.
  • Organized in 1984; Reorganized in 1988/89.
  • Sponsored by ESF Jan. 1992. Sponsorship extended by ESF for the years 1999-2001.
  • Europrobe obtained inspiration from: the ESF program European Geotraverse, the Canadian Lithoprobe Program.
  • Conceived as a program of focused integrated geological, geophysical, and geochemical research.

EUROPROBE HISTORY:

1984:                PROPOSED AT THE INTERNATIONAL GEOLOGICAL CONGRESS IN MOSCOW.
MODELLED ON A PREVIOUS ESF PROJECT – THE EUROPEAN GEOTRAVERSE
Late 1980’s:    REDESIGNED TO FOCUS ON THEMES
1992:                ACCEPTED BY ESF
90-ies:         THEMES DEVELOPED AS PROJECTS (10)
1999:                ESF EXTENSION TO 2001
 After 2001:   ????
